We take nonsense seriously
At Joyful Amazing Wonderful Industries, we make tabletop games, podcasts and radio shows. And I want to tell you about our first game where you get to argue about nonsense with your friends. It's called Wet, Soggy, Damp, or Dry.
In my day job as a podcaster, I got to talk to David Roth at Defector.com, who told me about his trip to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. And he had this beautiful line in his article:
"Everyone I spoke to about the Consumer Electronics Show before I went to it earlier this month kept describing it in terms that involved wetness in some way."
Weird, right?
So after we talked about his trip, I asked him to play a little game with me. I wanted him to describe, in terms of wetness, his favorite sandwich. His favorite novel. A couple of other things.
It was at that moment I realized: hey, there's an actual game here, one you could play with friends. So I drew it up on index cards, made some friends come over and play it, printed up some test packs, and in the process some kind of angel whispered in my ear the following:
YOU LOVE MAKING GAMES. YOU LoOoOoVe IT.
So, who am I to argue with divine inspiration? I'm not giving up podcasting, but I decided what the heck? I can make some fun games, spread some joy, and maybe make a little cash. My friend Kristin helped me figure out some numbers, my wife put up with my odd little obsession, and I registered Joyful Amazing Wonderful Industries. And now you can now argue with your friends about whether the French dip is superior to a club sandwich with light mayo.
So why back up this project?
You'll get a copy of the game. You'll help a two-person team bring you more weird ideas and even weirder games where you can argue with your friends about nonsense, and if you're especially generous, you'll get expansion packs and you'll get to know us. You'll help us grow a community of people dedicated to connecting in person instead of over messaging apps or gaming consoles. And together we can make the world a bit more joyful, amazing, and wonderful. Jury's out on whether we should be more industrious.
A little preview for the future:
I've already got two more games under development, one of them with the unwitting help of a 3 year-old (it's called SNACKS!). The other is based on made-up sayings. No, I'm not telling you what it's called, you can't eat cheese sitting down. But this will enable us to get into stores, pay for marketing support, print up a lot of regular and expansion packs of Wet Soggy Damp or Dry, improve our graphic design, and hit up some gaming conventions. If we're really lucky we'll even be able to make some weird merch.
This is a picture of a rock and for some reason Squarespace thought it’d be a good thing to include here. It is a good rock, and I’m not sure it’s accomplishing much in terms of selling games, but I’m going to keep it. The caption text is already a bit long, but as I write this, the page keeps expanding the image, so I may as well see how long I can make it by typing longer and longer. Currently I’m listening to the classic ‘90s pop rock hit by Sheryl Crow “All I Wanna Do.” I like it because I grew up in Los Angeles and there are several references to…wow this image just got bigger to accommodate the length of this caption. Should I keep going? Oh no it just got larger. I had better stop but I don’t want you to be left out of why I think this is Sheryl Crow’s best song besides “The Na-Na Song.” It’s pretty much the anthem of this company as I’ve designed it. Anyhow if I keep typing the rock picture will keep getting bigger and I’m not entirely clear as to why this feature exists. Would you like me to design a game based on the rock? I guess I could. If you do there’s a contact form below and you should send me an email with some kind of concept in mind. Maybe I’ll do it. Dang, it just got bigger again. I think it’s throwing off the margins of the graphic versus the yellow background. Doesn’t look great on desktop, but I guess it’s OK on mobile.
